Hatua Uganda – Safe, Supportive Living for Adults with Special Needs
At Therapy House Uganda, we believe that every adult deserves an opportunity to live a meaningful, dignified and fulfilling life, regardless of their support needs. This belief inspires Hatua Uganda, a dedicated program providing a safe, welcoming and supportive living environment for adults with special needs aged 18 years and above.
The transition into adulthood comes with new responsibilities, challenges and opportunities. For adults who require additional care, guidance and supervision, navigating this stage of life can be particularly challenging without the right support system.
Hatua Uganda exists to make this journey easier.
We provide supportive accommodation, personalized care, health and wellbeing support, practical life skills development and opportunities for gradual community inclusion. Our approach is built around walking alongside each individual, understanding their abilities, respecting their pace and helping them develop the confidence and skills needed for a more independent, guided and sustainable adulthood.
At Hatua Uganda, we do not simply provide a place to stay. We create an environment where adults with special needs can develop, participate, connect with others and experience a greater sense of belonging.

What Is Hatua Uganda?
Hatua is a programme under Therapy House Uganda designed to support adults with special needs aged 18 and above through a structured and nurturing living arrangement.
The word Hatua means “step” in Swahili. It represents our belief that personal growth happens one step at a time. Every achievement matters, whether it is learning a new daily routine, developing personal hygiene skills, communicating needs more confidently, participating in household activities or gradually becoming more involved in the community.
Our programme recognizes that adults have different abilities, needs and levels of independence. Some may require full-time supervision and assistance with everyday activities, while others may benefit from occasional guidance, structured routines and opportunities to practise independent living.
We therefore emphasize individualized support rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Our goal is to help every resident experience a safe and supportive adulthood while building on their strengths and abilities.
Our Core Services at Hatua Uganda
1. Safe and Supportive Accommodation
A safe and welcoming home is the foundation of a meaningful adult life.
Hatua Uganda provides supportive accommodation where adults with special needs can live in a structured, caring and comfortable environment. We strive to create a home-like atmosphere where residents feel accepted, respected and valued.
Our accommodation approach emphasizes personal safety, predictable routines, dignity, privacy and a sense of belonging.
We understand that moving away from familiar surroundings can be a significant adjustment. Our team therefore works towards making the transition as comfortable as possible, allowing each resident time to settle into their new environment.
2. Personalized Support and Guidance
Every individual has a unique personality, abilities, interests and support requirements.
At Hatua Uganda, we provide personalized support and guidance based on each resident’s circumstances. We take time to understand individual strengths, daily challenges, communication preferences and personal development goals.
Our support focuses on helping residents navigate everyday life, make appropriate choices, develop confidence and participate in activities that promote their wellbeing.
Rather than doing everything for residents, we encourage them to participate in their daily routines and accomplish tasks according to their abilities.
We believe that meaningful independence begins with the opportunity to learn, practise and grow.
3. Access to Nurses for Health and Wellbeing
Good health is essential to a comfortable and fulfilling adulthood.
Hatua Uganda recognizes the importance of monitoring residents’ health and ensuring that they can access appropriate healthcare support when needed.
Through access to nursing professionals, we aim to support residents with their general health and wellbeing needs, including routine health monitoring, medication support where appropriately prescribed, health education and coordination of medical attention when necessary.
We also recognize the importance of emotional wellbeing. A supportive environment, attentive care and appropriate professional guidance can contribute significantly to an individual’s overall quality of life.
Our approach is to ensure that health concerns are identified and addressed responsibly, with appropriate involvement of healthcare professionals and families or designated representatives.
4. Life Skills Development
Developing practical life skills is an important part of transitioning into adulthood.
At Hatua Uganda, we encourage residents to learn and practise everyday skills that can improve their confidence, participation and independence.
Depending on individual abilities and support plans, life skills development may include:
- Personal hygiene and grooming.
- Dressing and personal care routines.
- Preparing simple meals and understanding basic nutrition.
- Keeping personal spaces clean and organized.
- Laundry and household responsibilities.
- Communication and expressing personal needs.
- Basic money awareness and responsible spending.
- Following daily schedules and routines.
- Social interaction and relationship-building.
- Making everyday decisions and understanding personal boundaries.
We appreciate that progress looks different for every individual. Our focus is not on comparing residents but on recognizing individual achievements and encouraging continuous development.
5. Full-Time Caretaker Support
A reliable support system makes a significant difference in the lives of adults who require regular supervision and assistance.
Hatua Uganda provides full-time caretaker support to help residents navigate their daily activities in a safe and structured environment.
Our caretaker support focuses on assisting with everyday routines, providing guidance, observing individual wellbeing, encouraging participation and responding to residents’ support needs.
Having a consistent caregiver also helps create familiarity, trust and stability. These relationships are important in helping residents feel comfortable and secure in their living environment.
Our caregivers aim to provide support with dignity, patience and respect, while encouraging residents to do as much as they can independently.
6. Gradual Inclusion into the Community
Being part of a community is an important aspect of adulthood.
Adults with special needs should have opportunities to interact with others, develop friendships, participate in social activities and experience life beyond their immediate living environment.
Hatua Uganda promotes gradual community inclusion by helping residents participate in suitable social, recreational and community-based activities.
Depending on individual readiness and abilities, these opportunities may include:
- Supervised community visits and outings.
- Social and recreational activities.
- Participating in suitable community events.
- Developing positive social relationships.
- Practising communication and interaction skills.
- Taking part in appropriate community activities.
We understand that community participation may initially feel unfamiliar or challenging for some residents. Our approach is gradual, guided and responsive to individual comfort levels.
Our ultimate aspiration is to help every resident experience a greater sense of connection, acceptance and belonging.
Who Can Benefit from Hatua Uganda?
Hatua Uganda is designed for adults aged 18 years and above who have special needs and may require additional support to navigate everyday adult life.
Our programme may be suitable for adults who:
- Require a safe and supportive living environment.
- Need regular assistance or supervision with daily activities.
- Benefit from structured routines and personalized guidance.
- Need support developing practical life skills.
- Require access to nursing support and health monitoring.
- Experience difficulties with independent living.
- Would benefit from opportunities for guided social and community participation.
We recognize that special needs are diverse. Each prospective resident has individual circumstances that must be understood before determining whether our programme is an appropriate fit.
We therefore encourage families, guardians and caregivers to engage with our team to discuss individual support requirements and suitable arrangements.
Our Approach: Supporting Independence One Step at a Time
At Hatua Uganda, independence does not necessarily mean living without assistance. For some adults, independence means being able to make personal choices, communicate their needs, participate in daily activities and take greater responsibility for aspects of their lives.
For others, it may mean gaining confidence in familiar routines while continuing to receive consistent support.
We respect these differences.
Our approach is guided by five important principles:
Dignity: Every resident deserves respect, privacy and recognition of their individual worth.
Personalized care: Support should reflect individual abilities, needs, preferences and development goals.
Encouraging independence: We create opportunities for residents to learn, participate and accomplish tasks within their capabilities.
Safety and wellbeing: We prioritize a supportive environment that promotes physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
Belonging: We encourage meaningful relationships and gradual participation in the wider community.
We believe that progress should be measured by individual growth, not by unrealistic expectations or comparisons with others.
Why Choose Hatua Uganda?
Choosing an appropriate living arrangement for an adult with special needs is an important decision for families and caregivers.
At Hatua Uganda, we understand the trust involved in allowing another team to support someone you love.
Our programme brings together several important elements of adult support within one structured environment:
- A safe and welcoming place to live.
- Personalized support and everyday guidance.
- Access to nurses for health and wellbeing.
- Full-time caretaker support.
- Practical life skills development.
- Opportunities for gradual community inclusion.
- An approach that values dignity, individual abilities and personal growth.
We also recognize that families remain an important part of an adult’s support network. Where appropriate and with the resident’s consent or involvement of their authorized representative, we encourage constructive communication and collaboration with families and guardians.
Our intention is to complement existing family and professional support systems while providing residents with a nurturing environment in which they can continue developing.
Our Vision for Adults with Special Needs in Uganda
We envision a society where adults with special needs are not defined by their limitations but are recognized for their abilities, individuality and potential.
Many families face difficult decisions when their children with special needs reach adulthood. The support structures available during childhood may no longer be sufficient, yet opportunities for structured adult living and continued development can be limited.
Hatua Uganda seeks to contribute to a more supportive future by creating opportunities for adults to experience adulthood with dignity, guidance, safety and a sense of purpose.
We want every resident to have the opportunity to grow at their own pace, discover their abilities, build meaningful relationships and participate in everyday life.
Because adulthood should not be a journey that individuals and their families have to navigate alone.
